RESIDENTIAL REPAIR

The majority of clients contact our firm to request home repairs due to two reasons:  1.) They want the repair done correctly, the first time.  2.)  The complexity of the repair has outstripped the skill set of their current technician. Unfortunately, the vast majority of our repairs concentrate on remedying prior work completed by well-intentioned craftspeople.

Home repairs are rarely straightforward.  Technology continues to introduce new building products which have no track record regarding their long-term viability.  Many of these products will not survive the test of time. Furthermore, it's difficult to discern the thousands of products that are introduced on an annual basis.  Which products will outshine the others for years to come?  Our strength lies in our ability to dissect, and when necessary, discuss the potential repair options with acknowledged industry experts. We take pride in providing educated advice to the homeowner that is current and employs best practices within the construction industry.

Our Firm's Approaches To Repairs

Identify The Problem In Its Entirety

When approaching a home repair, our firm looks at the macro as well as micro level.  What led to the damage?  Was it caused by an installation error, lack of proper maintenance, an accident, or the end of the product's useful lifespan that caused the failure? Knowing why a product failed or damage occurred is the first step to addressing the problem.

Assess The Level Of Damage

Once we have identified the root of the problem, we evaluate the extent of damage that has been caused.  For example, is the rot superficial or does it go further into the structural components of the house? There are occasions where we have to explore further before we can answer these questions.  If that is the case, our firm will clearly explain the process of "Exploratory Demolition", the cost involved, the length of time needed to complete the task and the information that will be gathered as a result.

Present Repair Options To The Homeowner

At this stage of the evaluation, we present the homeowner with options of how to best proceed with the repair.  We discuss costs, the advantages and disadvantages of using different materials, as well as the average life expectancy of the materials.  Once the client has this information they can choose the path that fits best with their budget and repair objectives.

Read And Follow The Manufacture's Directions Before Making The Repair

Reading and following the manufacturer's directions is critical for any successful home repair.  These directions give guidance to the many elements that must be adhered to when repairing a home such as:

  • Minimum and maximum temperature during installation

  • Minimum and maximum expansion gaps (if applicable)

  • Correct fasteners required

  • Correct fastener schedule (number of fasteners and how often they are being used)

  • Appropriate preparation before applying or fastening the material

  • Appropriate dry time

Seek Expert Advice

Finally, when in doubt, we contact the experts, including manufacturer's representatives, technicians or specialty sub-contractors.  These are professionals who know the product better than anyone, including us.  They are able to provide in-depth guidance regarding the installation, performance, and longevity of the product that they represent.
